Papua New Guinea faces a deadly El Niño drought crisis in the Highlands. Food shortages, water scarcity, and hunger demand urgent government emergency response now.

Papua New Guinea is currently experiencing one of the most devastating environmental crises in recent years. Since March 2026, the Highlands region has received little to no rainfall due to the ongoing El Niño weather pattern. What began as a dry spell has now turned into a full-scale humanitarian emergency.

Across the Highlands Provinces, families are struggling to survive as food gardens fail, water sources dry up, and hunger spreads rapidly.

🌍 El Niño Drought Hits Papua New Guinea Hard

The El Niño phenomenon has caused extreme dry conditions across Papua New Guinea, particularly in the Highlands. Subsistence farming communities, who rely entirely on the land for food, are the hardest hit.

Gardens that once produced enough food for families are now completely destroyed. The absence of rain has made it impossible for crops to grow, leaving thousands without their primary food supply.

🌱 Kaukau Crop Failure and Pest Invasion

Kaukau (sweet potato), the staple food of Papua New Guinea, is being wiped out.

Due to the prolonged drought:

Crops are drying before maturity

Insects and pests are attacking weakened plants

Harvest yields have dropped drastically

This has led to severe food shortages across the Highlands, where kaukau is the main daily meal for most households.

🍽️ Families Sleeping Without Food

The situation is becoming critical.

Many families are now:

Going days without food

Sleeping hungry at night

Struggling to feed young children

With no access to supermarkets or alternative food sources in rural areas, communities are left with no backup.

💧 Water Shortage Becoming Life-Threatening

Water sources such as rivers, creeks, and natural springs are drying up.

In some villages:

People walk long distances to find water

Unsafe water sources are being used

Dehydration is increasing

Tragically, reports have emerged of a 3-year-old child dying due to lack of water, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

🐖 Livestock Dying – Impact on Culture and Survival

Pigs play a major role in Papua New Guinea culture and survival. However, the drought is now affecting livestock as well.

Pigs depend heavily on kaukau for food

With no crops available, pigs are starving

Many are dying, causing further economic loss to families

This deepens the crisis beyond food — it affects culture, income, and community life.

🚨 Call for Government Emergency Declaration

This is no longer just a seasonal problem — it is a national crisis.

There is an urgent call for the Government of Papua New Guinea to:

1. Declare a National State of Emergency

Recognize the severity of the drought and activate national disaster response systems.

2. Provide Free Food Relief

Distribute essential food supplies such as rice, flour, and tinned fish to affected communities.

3. Supply Clean Water

Install water tanks and provide emergency water delivery to drought-affected areas.

4. Support Farmers

Provide seeds, tools, and pest control assistance for recovery after the drought.

5. Protect Lives

Mobilize health services to prevent deaths caused by hunger, dehydration, and disease.

⚠️ Why Immediate Action Is Critical

Papua New Guinea depends heavily on subsistence farming. When gardens fail, people have no alternative food source.

If urgent action is not taken:

Hunger will worsen

More children will suffer

More lives will be lost

📢 Conclusion: A Nation in Urgent Need

The people of Papua New Guinea are resilient, but this crisis is beyond what communities can handle alone.

This is a call to action for leaders, organizations, and citizens:

Declare emergency. Deliver food. Provide water. Save lives.

Family Violence in Papua New Guinea and the Global Context: Causes, Impacts, and Counseling Solutions

Introduction

Family violence—also known as domestic violence—is one of the most serious social and human rights issues affecting communities worldwide. It involves physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological abuse within families or intimate relationships. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), family violence is a widespread concern that affects women, children, and even men, while globally it remains a persistent challenge across both developed and developing nations. Addressing this issue requires not only awareness but also strong counseling strategies and community-based solutions.

Family Violence in Papua New Guinea

Family violence in PNG is deeply rooted in cultural, social, and economic factors. In many communities, traditional beliefs about gender roles place men in dominant positions, often leading to unequal power relations. Women may be expected to remain submissive, and violence is sometimes normalized or treated as a private family matter.

Common forms of family violence in PNG include:

Physical abuse: Beating, assault, or harmful punishment

Emotional abuse: Verbal insults, threats, humiliation

Sexual abuse: Forced sexual acts within marriage or relationships

Economic abuse: Controlling access to money or employment

Contributing factors include:

Alcohol and substance abuse

Poverty and unemployment

Lack of education and awareness

Weak enforcement of laws such as the Family Protection Act 2013

The consequences are severe, including trauma, injury, broken families, and long-term psychological damage, especially among children who witness violence.

Global Perspective on Family Violence

Family violence is not limited to PNG—it is a global issue affecting millions of people across all societies. According to global research, approximately one in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.

Across countries, similar patterns emerge:

Gender inequality remains a major driver

Cultural norms sometimes justify or hide abuse

Victims often fear reporting due to stigma or retaliation

However, many countries have made progress through:

Strong legal frameworks

Support services such as shelters and hotlines

Public awareness campaigns

Counseling and rehabilitation programs

Despite these efforts, underreporting remains a global challenge.

Impacts of Family Violence

Family violence has far-reaching effects on individuals, families, and society:

1. Physical and Mental Health Effects

Victims may suffer injuries, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress.

2. Impact on Children

Children exposed to violence may develop behavioral problems, poor academic performance, and may later repeat cycles of violence.

3. Economic Consequences

Loss of productivity, healthcare costs, and poverty can worsen as victims struggle to maintain employment or independence.

4. Social Impact

Communities experience instability, increased crime, and weakened social structures.

Counseling Strategies and Solutions

Addressing family violence requires professional counseling approaches combined with community support. Below are effective counseling strategies:

1. Individual Counseling

Victims need safe spaces to express their experiences. Counseling helps them:

Rebuild self-esteem

Process trauma

Develop coping mechanisms

Techniques such as trauma-informed therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are effective.

2. Family Counseling

In situations where safety can be ensured, family counseling can:

Improve communication

Address underlying conflicts

Promote healthy relationships

However, this must only be done when there is no immediate risk of harm.

3. Group Therapy

Support groups allow victims to:

Share experiences

Feel less isolated

Learn from others facing similar challenges

4. Perpetrator Rehabilitation Programs

Counseling is not only for victims but also for offenders. Programs focus on:

Anger management

Accountability

Changing harmful beliefs about gender and power

5. Crisis Intervention and Safety Planning

Counselors assist victims in:

Creating safety plans

Accessing shelters and emergency services

Knowing their legal rights

6. Community-Based Counseling

In PNG, community leaders, churches, and local organizations play a vital role. Awareness programs can:

Challenge harmful cultural norms

Encourage reporting of violence

Promote gender equality

Practical Solutions and Recommendations

To effectively reduce family violence, the following actions are essential:

Strengthen law enforcement: Ensure laws are applied fairly and consistently

Increase public awareness: Education campaigns in schools and communities

Expand counseling services: Especially in rural areas of PNG

Empower women economically: Provide education and employment opportunities

Engage men and boys: Promote positive masculinity and respectful relationships

Partnerships: Collaboration between government, NGOs, and communities

Conclusion

Family violence is a critical issue in both Papua New Guinea and the global community. While cultural, economic, and social factors contribute to the problem, it is not impossible to overcome. Through effective counseling strategies, stronger legal systems, and community engagement, societies can break the cycle of violence. Creating safe families is essential for building healthy communities and a better future for all.

Papua New Guinea Government System and Corruption: Challenges and Solutions

Papua New Guinea Government System and Corruption: Challenges and Solutions Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a democratic system of government, yet corruption continues to be a major issue affecting its development. Understanding how the system works and why corruption exists is important for citizens, students, and leaders alike.

Overview of the Papua New Guinea Government System. Papua New Guinea operates under a parliamentary democracy, based on the Westminster system.

The government is divided into three main branches:
1. Executive: Led by the Prime Minister, responsible for running the country.

2. Legislature: The National Parliament, which makes laws.

3. Judiciary: Independent courts that interpret and apply the law The Head of State is the British monarch, represented by the Governor-General. Citizens elect Members of Parliament (MPs), who represent their communities.

Tourism Hospitality Highlights in Jiwaka Province

Tourism and hospitality in Jiwaka province are shifting from microeconomics to macroeconomics because of the people's lifestyle, certain characters and behavior. Also in the province, the law and order is seriously been handled by the law enforcers and with the support of the people in Jiwaka province.

Recently, the DDA ( District Development Authority ) of Jiwaka province just signed a partnership contract with agreement with the Kokoda Tracking Association to side by side working with them to attract tourism impact in the Oro and Jiwaka provinces.

This is one great example of shifting from one standard to another especially among the locals. Further it also enhances the locals to have opened up new guesthouse and lodges for catering guests coming into the province. By doing that, it brings income to the villages and also brings revenue to the country. This makes people not to concentrate only on cash crops such as coffee and tea to earn income.

It is a remarkable demonstration of ordinary Papua New Guinea's enthusiasm to participate in an industry that has markets far offshore and as removed from the rural setting as possible. The good thing that attracts foreigners to come to our country is Tourism and Hospitality. Jiwaka is one of the province in PNG that have best landscape, diverse culture and the environment is conditionally conducive for foreigners to adapt.

So in ten to twenty years’ time, the Tourism and Hospitality in Jiwaka will advance to next level because of the early progress that happening today. Jiwakan people are admirable and friendly too.
